Knabe Grand
ON SALE $17,000
Knabe is, of course, known along with Steinway as one of the finest American pianos. The distinguished and time-honored instruments which bear this celebrated name combine in a rare degree, power and sweetness of tone, delicacy and poetic singing character, and a beauty of case design not surpassed.
Older pianos are generally more interesting because they tend to be less uniform. Even the same model by the same maker in the same vintage could differ in ways that were significant because so much of the work had been masterfully done by hand. This particular Knabe grand piano is a rare Victorian beauty. At the turn of the century, new aesthetic ideals resulted in the modernization of many ornate pianos. Lion's legs would be changed into "ice cream cone" legs. Pedal lyres and other detail and filigree work were removed and altered. The beauty of this Knabe grand piano, a Victorian instrument in its original, unaltered exterior condition, is truly unique. The case is of Brazilian rosewood. The music rest has an elaborate tracery of scroll-work.
The rebuilding of the piano was done by Gary Teters, a fastidious and cheerful technician in Portland.
